John Shumate Receives East Georgia Regional Medical Center Nursing Excellence Award

, GA – East Georgia Regional Medical Center (EGRMC) proudly announces that John Shumate, RN, has been awarded the 2023 Nursing Excellence Award for his unwavering dedication to patient care, mentorship, and compassionate service.
Surrounded by his colleagues, family, and friends, Shumate was recognized during a special ceremony on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. A beloved member of the EGRMC team since 1985, Shumate is celebrated not only for his extensive nursing expertise but also for his warm, patient-centered approach and commitment to mentoring others.
Shumate, who has served in the ER, Cath Lab, and PACU over his decades-long career, is the first male nurse to receive this prestigious award at EGRMC. His peers describe him as a knowledgeable, compassionate, and dependable nurse who consistently goes above and beyond for patients and staff alike.
“John has an incredible gift for treating patients as a whole, not just addressing their immediate needs but advocating for their overall well-being,” said a colleague during the award ceremony. “He’s the kind of nurse who makes patients feel seen and valued, and he’s always ready to lend his expertise to help others.”
Shumate’s colleagues and patients alike have praised his dedication to excellence. His photographic memory and advanced certifications make him a trusted resource in critical situations, with physicians often seeking his input. He is also an educator, teaching BLS, ACLS, and malignant hyperthermia drills, and he finds great joy in mentoring new nurses and team members.
Beyond his professional role, Shumate is deeply committed to his community and faith. He has participated in numerous mission trips, served in civic and charitable organizations, and provided mentorship and support to college students over the years.
