Gratitude Club Donates Baby Blankets to Women's Pavilion
5/30/2019
Statesboro’s local Gratitude Club at SHINE had the opportunity recently to visit and donate baby blankets to the Women’s Pavilion at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The children also had a chance to see the newborn babies through the glass window in the nursery. This field trip was the culmination of Dr. Pam Worrell-Carlisle’s mental health students’ work over the past semester with the children at SHINE.
SHINE is an after-school program sponsored by Pineland Community Service Board. Dr. Worrell-Carlisle, Assistant Professor at Georgia Southern University’s School of Nursing, initiated the Gratitude Club in partnership with SHINE this year. Student nurses involved the children in activities to foster a sense of gratitude and teach how acts of kindness lead to positive emotions for both the giver and the receiver. Research shows that gratitude can be effective in reducing risks for mental health disorders in both children and adults. Finding something to be grateful for can be a way of increasing resilience to life’s changes. The baby blankets that were so thoughtfully put together in each of the children’s own artistically decorated bags, were donated for new mothers who may be economically disadvantaged in our community. These gifts to the new moms are meant to convey that someone cares about them and their new baby, and to be a reminder to find at least three things every day to be grateful for, even in challenging times. The Women’s Pavilion at East Georgia Regional Medical Center is grateful for this meaningful act of kindness from the Gratitude Club. It may be an unassuming piece of fabric, but for many new moms and babies, these baby blankets represent the generosity and caring that is woven into our lives.
