ter is proud to recognize Brook Smith, R.N., of the labor & delivery unit, as the recipient of the DAISY Award for her exceptional compassion, leadership and commitment to patients, families and fellow caregivers.
Smith has served at East Georgia Regional Medical Center for five years and works as both a staff nurse and charge nurse in labor & delivery. A native of Sylvania, she is known for her calm leadership, unwavering advocacy for patients and passion for helping families experience one of life’s most meaningful moments.
“I love compassionate care,” Smith said. “I love caring for women and children, being an advocate for them, and helping create the best possible experience they can have.”
Smith was nominated by both patients and colleagues who described her as a trusted leader, mentor and role model whose influence extends far beyond the bedside.
One colleague shared that as a new graduate nurse, Smith has been instrumental in building confidence and professional growth by providing encouragement, constructive feedback and creating an environment built on mutual respect and teamwork.
“Brook has never failed to promote a sense of teamwork and support,” the nominator wrote. “She has helped me grow into a more confident nurse while ensuring our team has the resources needed to provide exceptional patient care.”
Other nominations praised Smith’s calm demeanor during emergencies, her dedication to patient safety and her willingness to step in wherever she is needed.
“She is the person everyone turns to when challenges arise,” one colleague wrote. “No matter how demanding the day, her dedication and professionalism never waver. She leads with humility, communicates clearly and creates a reassuring presence for patients and staff alike.”
As charge nurse, Smith is recognized for mentoring new nurses, precepting students and investing in the next generation of labor & delivery caregivers. Colleagues noted that she leads by example, consistently placing the needs of patients and her team above her own while fostering a positive workplace culture.
“Brook embodies what it means to be an outstanding nurse,” another nomination stated. “She is a true team player, an exceptional leader and someone who inspires everyone around her.”
Chief Nursing Officer Marie Burdett said Smith exemplifies the qualities celebrated by the DAISY Award.
“Brook consistently demonstrates compassionate care, servant leadership and an unwavering commitment to excellence. She not only provides exceptional care to every patient and family she serves, but she also invests in her teammates by mentoring, encouraging and leading with kindness. We are incredibly proud to recognize Brook with this well-deserved honor.”

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, an auto-immune disease. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
